  • Get in shape before surgery.

Don’t forget that there are risks related to surgery as well as anesthesia.

Body weight: Remember that the greater your body weight, the greater the anesthetic risk. Optimize your weight as best as you are able. Consult with your doctor on how best to get that accomplished.

Pulmonary function: Patients with asthma or chronic tobacco use may require use of inhalers to optimize lung function. Ask your doctor if use of inhalers is necessary.

Blood Pressure: Low or high blood pressure can cause issues under anesthesia. Make sure to ask your doctor on how best to take anti-hypertensive medications around the time of your surgery.

Diabetes: Make sure to ask your doctor how best to manage your diabetes, especially since your oral intake may be restricted.

Pre-habilitation: Physical therapy often best begins before surgery to strengthen muscle groups. Ask your doctor how best to accomplish this.
